The phrase “inspire a generation” was used a lot both before and during the Olympics this year. However, research from sporting charity Chance to Shine, has revealed that our Olympic legacy may already be dwindling, as some children are struggling to get even two hours of P.E a week.
The survey found that half of the 1,006 parents interviewed said that their children want to do more sport. However eight out of ten parents also said that the amount of P.E and variety in sport had either stayed the same or had even reduced since the Olympics.
Asked “which are the three biggest challenges facing schools trying to increase the amount of sport children do at school”, 42 per cent said that the pressures to fit sport within the rest of their child’s curriculum were to blame. 32 per cent said it was due to a lack of facilities, and 29 percent thought that a lack of funding was prohibiting the amount of sport – this is despite the £1 billion five-year youth sport strategy by Government.
Lord Coe recently revealed his frustration at failing to guarantee the Olympics’ legacy through school sport. “I find it frustrating that off the back of the sport we have witnessed, the role models that have emerged, that we are still discussing the future of school sport in the state sector.”
After just one hundred days after the London Games’ closing ceremony, is our chance to “inspire a generation” already gone?
